I hope this finds you healthy and happy. As a volunteer of Shelters of Saratoga, I’ve experienced firsthand the important work being done to help people experiencing housing and food insecurity right here in the Saratoga community. I want to share with you the story of Kristine who is just one of the many people your generosity supports throughout the year:
KRISTINE'S STORY
I had no hope. When I arrived at SOS I thought “What has my life become?” It wasn’t the first time I had asked myself this question but this time it felt like I had arrived at rock bottom. I was homeless, and I was hopeless. I had been through a series of traumatic events and never learned the coping strategies I needed to get beyond them. I was fleeing from yet another situation I should have been able to manage if I knew how. My mental and physical health was declining and I saw no way out.
All I had left was Chip. Chip is my support dog, a beautiful husky I’ve had since a traumatic brain injury left my vision impaired. Chip was the only constant in my life, until I arrived at SOS. The staff at SOS welcomed us with open arms and hearts. I was treated with dignity and respect and I began to feel a hope that things could be different in the future.

I knew I couldn’t do the work alone, I needed help. My case manager helped me find the care I needed. She helped me get to my appointments and helped me learn coping strategies when my triggers surfaced. Without this kind of support I would’ve been stuck in the same vicious cycle that landed me at SOS.
The staff helped me secure all the resources I needed to secure my new apartment. Moving day was filled with happy tears as a dozen volunteers helped me move my things and set up my apartment. Now Chip and I can move forward.
I owe my renewed sense of hope to everyone who supports Shelters of Saratoga. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
