“Your support has helped reduce
area recidivism by 66% over
the last 10 years.”
Dear Community Supporter,
Ending a person’s homelessness is a community effort that needs your help. I knew when I joined the Shelters of Saratoga’s (SOS) Board of Directors in 2011, that there were people within the Saratoga Springs community and broader Saratoga County region whose lives had been affected by homelessness. Affluent communities are not exempt from the reality that people’s lives can change in an instance. An unexpected medical bill, illness or missed work are enough to cause a person to become homeless. Many families within our communities are living at or below the poverty line, even in one of the fastest growing counties in New York State. And they too, are at risk of one day becoming homeless.
SOS has been a safety net for people experiencing homelessness in Saratoga, Warren and Washington counties for over 26 years. SOS provides the tools and support people need to regain their footing. By providing shelter, services and hope, SOS changes people’s lives.
Your support helps someone like Joe, who is currently staying at SOS’s Walworth Street shelter.
“I’ve spent the last 45 years raising a family in Ballston Spa. I never thought at 59 years of age I would be homeless. In the fall of 2017, I was laid off from my job as a foreman for a heavy equipment machine shop. My life spiraled out of control, my wife and I divorced and ultimately, I needed to give up the home we worked so hard to build. My only option was Shelters of Saratoga.
I came here in February 2018 and the case managers have assisted with financial coaching, counseling and helped me stay accountable to achieving my goal of independent living. I rediscovered my love of cooking and have used that to start a brand new career. I’ve now been employed full-time and promoted twice since March. I’ve saved much of the money I’ve earned and I’m looking forward to an apartment opening up at a local senior housing complex. I don’t like to think about where I would’ve been if SOS wasn’t here to help. My story is unique, but so many others face more extraordinary barriers. I’ve watched them be successful as well by continuing substance treatment, connecting with healthcare providers and moving into permanent housing. Thank you for helping provide these services to so many whose lives depend on it.”
Over the course of the past 8 years, I have seen many people successfully transform their lives. Your support allows SOS to continue building on the successes of the case managed shelter program and collaborate with partners to find housing solutions for all those in need in our community.
Will you please join us in building a stronger Saratoga community?
